This page will teach you how to make a simple animated button. You can also use this for banners, etc. This tutorial in based on Paint Shop Pro 8.0, so if you need it, head on over to Jasc.Com. Now, on to the tutorial!

Adding text:

  • Select the "A" tool on your left-hand toolbar (about the 14th tool).
  • Click on your image
  • Select a font style and size of your choice; enter your text in the box provided.
  • Click apply.
  • Pull the edges to adjust the size and shape of your text and/or move it to another area on your image.

  • Animating:

You want to keep your base image the same if possible; if you have other plans then disregard this sentence.
Basically animating something is making your image move or change in some way to attract attention of visitors or any viewers in general.
When it comes down to basic animation, you have to understand frames. Each frame is a broken down piece of motion. If you were animating a person, it would take a LOT of frames, and it would take you quite some time to do and humans and other living things don't jump sporadically across a page, there are single motions in larger motions. So you must be able to break down the motions as best as possible.
I animated the text in this demo. If you would like to do the same, continue reading.

    1. Begin with nothing open in Jasc Animation Shop (forever on referred to as "JAS" throughout this tutorial).
    2. Paste your image by right-clicking and selecting "paste as new image." That is your first FRAME.
    3. Right click on your image and mouse over "paste," then select from the list that appears, "After current frame."
    4. You should now notice that you have two frames. If you would like to zoom in on your frames, select teh magnifying glass at the top of the page, which is next to the arrow-tool. Once you have finished with your zoom tool, be sure to click again on the arrow tool.
    5. Now click on your second frame, make sure it is outlined by both blue and red.
    6. Click on "Animation," "Replace color..."
    7. Choose a color to replace (whatever color your text is- you can do this by simply placing your mouse over your text and you should notice your arrow has turned to an eyedropper).
    8. Then choose a color to replace your text color WITH. If your text is dark, make it light, and vice versa.
    9. Click "Ok." You should notice an immediate difference between your frame one and frame two. If you would like to see what your animation looks like already, check out "View" "Animation." To get back to your animation work from viewing it, you can either close the window or go back to the top of your screen to the same commands: "view," then "animation."
    10. SAVING YOUR WORK IS ALWAYS IMPORTANT AND KEY. You WILL lose everything you have worked on so far if you don't save your files. When saving, there is a big long mess of saving stuff you will want to avoid in the future. To get through this, put a check box in the first window that appears, then continue clicking "Next" until you are able to click "Finish." From now on all you should have to do is click the floppy disk at the top of your screen to save your image. Save often. I will not tell you in this tutorial when to save. Decide for yourself. Back to your image. Depending on how many words you would like to have flash on your image, it determines how much work you will have to do. For instance, I put several words flashing upon my image.
    11. Go back to PSP and click on the image that you had previously copied into JAS.
    12. Find the undo button and undo your text.
    13. What do you want it to switch to saying? Select the text tool and type in what you'd like it to say, and of course go through all the settings to make sure they meet your preferences.
    14. Copy your new image into JAS, after your second frame. For help see #2 above. You should have a total of THREE frames now.
    15. Now repeat #3 above. You should have FOUR frames now.
    16. For changing the text, repeat steps #5 through #9. Now notice the changes between frames 1 & 2, and frames 3 & 4. You can preview your animation again if you would like.
    17. For each of the words you want on your animations, repeat steps #11 through #16

The finished product should look something like this, but you can of course customize to your liking:
